While remembering is on, Subtext saves the chat text you see so it can follow the conversation. Your own messages are used to match your writing style. Photos are never kept in memory.

Memory is kept per Subtext account and per platform account. If the platform account can’t be identified, memory lasts only for the browser session.

You can turn remembering off, clear one chat, or clear everything. Signing out clears this device.

The relevant messages, earlier context and any photos in that range are sent to the Subtext service, which is hosted on Convex. OpenAI processes the text and photos. TypeSafe processes the text and photo descriptions to check suggested readings.

Automatic help, if you turn it on for a chat, works the same way.

Inputs and results are encrypted in temporary storage. Inputs expire after 15 minutes and results after 24 hours. Cleanup runs every minute.

Retention by those providers, and platform backups, are handled separately by the providers themselves.

Google sign-in provides your account identity. We keep usage records for your allowance, not an archive of your conversations.

Deleting your account blocks access immediately and removes your account data and temporary readings. Devices that are offline keep local data until they reconnect. Sign out on a device to clear it right away.

If you rate a reading as helpful or not, we store that vote with the reading’s ID, never the messages. We also keep daily totals (sign-ups, readings, upgrades) and a weekly record of which accounts were active, to understand how Subtext is used.

If you subscribe to Plus, checkout and billing are handled by Polar, our merchant of record. Polar processes your payment details and invoices; Subtext never sees your card number. We receive your order status so we can turn Plus on or off.

If you join the waitlist, we keep only your email address to tell you when Subtext is on the Chrome Web Store. Ask us at support@getsubtext.chat and we’ll remove it.
